Create and edit a goal

You create and edit a goal in the same window. It’s the only place a goal’s target, date, accounts and monthly plan change.

  1. Open Planning → Goals in the sidebar and click New goal.
  2. Optionally pick a logo: a brand, letters, an icon or your own image.
  3. Enter a Name, for example “Car” or “Emergency fund”.
  4. Enter the Target amount and choose its Currency. It starts on your base currency.
  5. Optionally set a Target date. It must be after today.
  6. Under Accounts, click Add accounts, tick the accounts that hold the money and set each one’s share. Click Done. See Accounts and shares.
  7. Optionally turn on Set a monthly amount and enter how much you plan to save each month. See Monthly amount.
  8. Check the sentence at the bottom, for example “Reach $8,000 by 1 Jun 2027. That needs about $450 a month from today.”
  9. Click Create goal.

A goal needs a name, a target above 0 and at least one account.

The target can be in any currency. A goal for a trip abroad can be in euros even if your base currency is dollars. Balances in other currencies are converted at today’s exchange rate, so progress is always exact in the goal’s currency.

The currency needs an exchange rate to your base currency today. If there isn’t one, the goal can’t be saved with that currency. If the rate goes missing later, the goal shows No exchange rate until it’s back.

The date is optional.

  • With a date, the goal shows how much you need each month to get there, and whether you’re Ahead, On track or Behind.
  • Without a date, the goal shows the month you’ll reach the target at your pace, and it’s never behind.

Each account you add counts toward the goal by a percentage of its balance, its share. At 100% the whole balance counts. At 25%, a quarter of it does. The target stays the same whatever shares you pick: the share only decides how much of each balance counts.

  1. In the goal window, click Add accounts, or Manage accounts if the goal already has some.
  2. Tick each account that counts toward the goal. Its share starts at 100%, or at whatever is free if other goals already use part of it.
  3. Change the share if only part of the balance should count. The row shows how much that counts right now.
  4. Click Done.

The goal window then shows the accounts you picked and how much they count now.

Accounts you own in these categories: General, Cash, Current account, Saving account, Investment and Crypto.

Credit cards, overdrafts, loans, vehicles, bonus and insurance accounts can’t back a goal, and neither can accounts someone has shared with you. If you change an account to a category that can’t back a goal, it’s removed from every goal it was in.

On Investment and Crypto accounts, market moves count as progress: a rising market moves the goal forward and a falling one sets it back. Projections assume no growth, only what you save.

Archived accounts still count, because the money is still there. They’re marked Archived in the list.

One account can back several goals. Its shares across your active and paused goals can add up to 100% at most. For example, a savings account can count 60% toward “Holiday” and 40% toward “Emergency fund”.

In the accounts window, each row shows how much is still free, for example “35% free”. An account that’s fully used is greyed out and lists the goals using it. If you enter more than is free, the row shows the maximum and you can’t save until you lower it.

  • Pausing a goal keeps its shares, so resuming it never fails.
  • Archiving a goal frees its shares for other goals.
  • Unarchiving a goal claims its shares again. If another goal has taken part of an account in the meantime, you’ll see how much of that account is still free and need to lower the share first.

By default, a goal’s pace is how much it actually grew in recent months (see Pace). Turn on Set a monthly amount to use your own plan instead, for example when you’ve just set up a standing order or the accounts are too new to have history. Turn it off to go back to your actual pace.

The monthly amount is in the goal’s currency and is what you plan to count toward the goal each month. If an account only counts by part of its balance, you need to deposit more than that into it. The What if tab works out how much.

On the Goals page, click the three-dot button on a goal’s row. On the goal’s page, click Edit, or the three-dot button next to it.

  • Edit opens the goal window.
  • Pause keeps the goal and its shares but leaves it out of the feasibility check. Resume brings it back.
  • Archive moves the goal to Archived and frees its account shares. Unarchive brings it back.
  • Delete removes the goal and its shares for good. Your accounts and transactions stay as they are.
