Goals

A goal is something you’re saving for, such as a car, a holiday or an emergency fund. You give it a target amount, an optional date and the accounts that hold the money. MoneyMatter then reads those accounts’ balances to show how much you’ve saved, how fast you’re saving and when you’ll reach the target.

Goals never move money. They don’t create transactions or touch your balances. When you add money to a linked account, the goal moves forward on its own.

In the sidebar, open Planning, then Goals.

The page lists your goals in three sections:

  • Active: goals you’re still saving for, including paused ones.
  • Ended: goals that reached their target.
  • Archived: goals you’ve put away. This section is collapsed. Click show to open it.

Use the search box to find a goal by name. The Behind chip shows only goals that are behind or overdue, and Archived includes archived goals in the list.

Each row shows the goal’s progress bar, how much you’ve saved of the target, its status, its date (or no date) and how much it needs each month. Click a row to open the goal.

  • One target in any currency. The target can be in your base currency or any other currency, such as a holiday in euros. See Target currency.
  • Shares of one or more accounts. For each account, you choose what percentage of its balance counts toward the goal. One account can back several goals, as long as its shares add up to 100% or less. See Accounts and shares.
  • Investment and crypto accounts too. Market moves on those accounts count as progress, up or down. Projections never assume growth.
  • Progress from real balances. There’s nothing to update by hand. See How progress is calculated.

Click a goal to open it. The header shows the goal’s name, its status, its date and how many accounts back it, with the accounts listed below. If more than three accounts back it, hover +N (or tap it on a phone) to see them all.

A strip of five numbers sits under the header:

NumberWhat it shows
TargetThe target amount, with the date if the goal has one.
SavedWhat counts toward the goal right now. Once the goal is reached, this cell shows Reached and how far above the target you are.
LeftWhat’s still missing.
NeedsHow much you need to save each month to hit the target date. Goals without a date show no date.
PaceHow much you’re saving a month, and the month you’ll reach the target at that pace (around a month).

Below the strip are three tabs:

  • Progress: your monthly pace, the projected finish, your best month, a timeline chart of what you’ve saved with the projection and the target line, and the change month by month.
  • Accounts: each linked account with its share, its balance and how much of it is counted, plus the Total counted. This tab is read-only. To change accounts or shares, use Edit goal.
  • What if: a sandbox to try a different monthly amount, date or shares. See What if and feasibility.
StatusMeaning
AheadAt your pace, you reach the target at least a month before the date.
On trackAt your pace, you reach the target by the date.
Behind · N moAt your pace, you reach the target N months after the date, or you aren’t saving toward it at all.
OverdueThe date has passed and the target isn’t reached.
ReachedWhat’s counted has reached the target.
around a monthThe goal has no date. It shows when you’ll reach the target at your pace instead. A goal without a date is never behind.
No dateThe goal has no date and no pace yet.
Not enough historyThe accounts don’t have three full months of history yet, and you haven’t set a monthly amount. See Pace.
No accountsNo account backs the goal, for example because its only account was deleted.
PausedYou paused the goal.
ArchivedYou archived the goal.
No exchange rateThere’s no exchange rate from the goal’s currency to your base currency today, so progress can’t be worked out. It comes back once the rate is available.

When what’s counted reaches the target, the goal shows Reached, moves to Ended, and you get an in-app notification, “Goal reached: [name]”. Click it to open the goal. You’re notified once per completion. MoneyMatter checks your goals once a day and right after you create or edit one.

A reached goal stays in Ended and keeps showing Reached even if the balance dips later, so spending some of the money doesn’t bring the notification back. If the goal is below its target more than 30 days after you reached it, it goes back to Active, and reaching it again sends a new notification. Changing the target amount or the currency also starts over: if the goal is still reached after the change, you’re notified again.

To aim higher once a goal is reached, open it and click Raise target.

Goals are part of the Essential and Plus plans, and of the 40-day trial every new account starts with. Anyone can open the page and see their goals, but creating, editing and deleting them needs one of those plans.

On the Early Adopter plan, the Goals page offers Start free trial, a free 14-day trial of goals, once per account. A banner shows the days left, for example “Goals trial · 9 days left”. When the trial ends, your goals stay visible, but you need to upgrade to edit them. Read-only accounts can’t start the trial. See Plans and billing.
